Hack the Nest Privacy Notice
Last updated: October 18, 2026
This notice explains what information Hack the Nest collects when you register, how we use it, and who sees it.
Who we are
Hack the Nest is a hackathon at Eastern Michigan University. It is organized by Google Developer Group on Campus at Eastern Michigan University. Hack the Nest is also an official Major League Hacking (MLH) Member Event.
If you have a question about your information, email us at hackthenest.org@gmail.com.
What we collect
On the registration form and your profile:
- Account: your email and how you sign in (email and password, or Google).
- About you: first name, last name, email, phone number, age, country of residence, T-shirt size.
- Education: school type, school name, level of study, and graduate degree if it applies.
- Eligibility: whether you will be under 18 on November 14, 2026, and, if you are, how you are enrolled at Eastern Michigan University.
- Agreements: your answers to the MLH checkboxes, with the time you answered.
- Resume book (optional, 18 or older): whether you want to join the Hack the Nest resume book and, only if you join, your resume file.
- LinkedIn or portfolio link (optional), if you give one.
- More about you: previous hackathons, dietary restrictions, food allergies, emergency contact name and phone, accommodations, why you want to attend, and whether you prefer not to appear in photos and videos.
- Event records: your RSVP and check-in status, and your minor consent status if it applies.
The website uses cookies to keep you signed in. If you turn on notifications, we use them to send event announcements.
If you are required to complete a minor consent form, a parent or guardian completes it through a separate form, and we keep a record of whether it was received and verified.
How we use it
We use your information to:
- run registration and send you updates about the event, by email and by notification if you turn them on,
- order T-shirts and plan food,
- plan for accessibility and any accommodations you ask for,
- keep participants safe, including handling consent for minors,
- check you in at the event,
- run prizes and judging,
- invite you to future Hack the Nest events and plan which schools to reach.
Who we share it with
Major League Hacking. When you register, you agree to share your registration information with MLH, as described in the MLH checkboxes. MLH handles it under the MLH Privacy Policy. If you opt in to MLH and DEV emails, MLH may send you occasional messages. That box is optional.
Our partners, only through the resume book. We share your resume with partners only if you choose to be in the Hack the Nest resume book. If you opt in, partners receive your resume plus your name, email, school, level of study, graduate degree (if you gave one) and LinkedIn or portfolio link (if you gave one). Some partners may receive the resume book before the event and others after. Partners keep and use the copies they receive under their own policies. We never sell your data. We only ask for your resume if you choose to join, and if you do not join, we do not keep one.
People who help us run the site and event. Some people and services help us host the website, store files and send email. They handle your information only to help us run Hack the Nest.
Eastern Michigan University offices. We share information with EMU offices only where we need to, for example for minor consent or other campus requirements.
If you are under 18
Participants under 18 are not asked for a resume and are not included in the resume book. If you are required to complete the minor consent form, we email it to the address you registered with, and your parent or guardian completes it. Only the organizers and Eastern Michigan University staff who handle minor consent can see the responses.
Photos and video
We will take photos and video at Hack the Nest. MLH and Hack the Nest may publish them, for example on websites and social media. The MLH Contest Terms you accept when you register also cover photos and video. If you would rather not be featured, tick "I would prefer not to appear in Hack the Nest photos and videos" in your profile or tell an organizer at check-in. You will get a lanyard that tells our photographers, and we will do our best to leave you out of the photos and videos we publish. Participants under 18 who need the minor consent form also receive a photo release with it.
How long we keep it
- Resumes: deleted on January 14, 2027. Partners keep the copies they already received under their own policies.
- Your name, email and school: kept until December 31, 2027, so we can invite you to next year's Hack the Nest and plan which schools to reach. Email hackthenest.org@gmail.com any time and we will remove you.
- All other registration and profile information: deleted on January 14, 2027, unless Eastern Michigan University requires us to keep a record longer (for example, minor consent records).
- We may keep totals that do not identify anyone, such as how many people came from each school.
Your choices
- You can edit your profile at any time.
- You can turn notifications on or off from your account page.
- You can upload, replace or delete your resume in your profile.
- You can leave the resume book at any time in your profile. We then delete your resume and remove you from future resume books. Copies already sent to partners cannot be recalled.
- You can opt out of MLH and DEV emails through MLH.
- You can stop emails about future Hack the Nest events, or ask us to correct or delete your information, by emailing hackthenest.org@gmail.com.
Changes to this notice
If we change this notice, we will post the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change affects how we share your resume, we will tell you before the change applies to you.
